Project Overview

In 2016, the Bookstore Director called for a rebrand of the UCSD Bookstore to help save its slumping sales. The store was due to be taken over by a Target Shopping Center if we did not make major changes. Either way, we would lose one floor of the store to Target, but we had the opportunity to prevent a full takeover. The Marketing Department, of which I was second-in-charge to the Marketing Manager, was tasked with developing the new branding collateral. The Director and other management requested that the update be bright, youthful, modern, fun, and more student-oriented (as it was a college bookstore).

My team and I went to work developing plans for a new logo, new website, new social media collateral, and proposals for altering the store itself to match the new branding. The below images are the result of our process. We opted to brighten the color scheme, modernize fonts, and craft a responsive website. We also shot and included more student-centric images that we included across all channels. The campus mascot is "King Triton" and a prominent art piece on campus is a bird-like sculpture called the "Sun God" statue. We brought these campus figures in as mascots with our own spin. This allowed us to be further connected to the students and campus community. The updates have stabilized sales and prevented the whole Bookstore from being taken over by a Target Shopping Center.

While we worked as a team on most of the project, I was personally responsible for the logo, most of the website updates, the videos, and the unused app concepts shown.

Above is the redesigned Bookstore logo. We opted to update the previous logo by simplifying the design of the logomark (symmetry, removing highlights on trident, and new color scheme). However, we introduced a logotype to intertwine the name of the store and the logomark, making it more easily understood to the public. We then introduced consistent logo usage and color scheme across all social media and increased usage of student model pictures.

We also redesigned the Bookstore website in a new color scheme, new user experience, and made it mobile-friendly and responsive. We opted for a much brighter and airier look to both modernize the site and make the large amounts of product and information more easily digestible.

Below you'll also find unused concept art for an app.
